Error correction: How to correct? When to correct? When not to correct?

Students’ mistakes are usually seen as something bad, a sign that there´s a problem in the classroom. Our primitive reaction as teachers is to correct students as an attempt to help them to achieve what we consider to be correct English.

My talk aims at investigating students’ mistakes and how to implement useful techniques to really provide our students with the help they might need. Among other subtopics, I intend to discuss:
  • What are the main types of mistakes?
  • What triggers them and what do they really mean?
  • How can we deal with different error types in different lesson stages?
  • How to use effective correction techniques?
