[AMERICAN IDIOMS] WHAT DOES PIE IN THE SKY MEAN?

Once again, it might not necessary be an American English idiom. You may hear it in other varieties of the English language around the globe.

But my question is: DO YOU KNOW WHAT PIE IN THE SKY MEAN?

Let’s read the examples below:

EXAMPLES:

Don’t believe those pie-in-the-sky advertisements you see on TV selling large plots of land for pennies. They are too good to be true.

The salesman promised John that the wrinkle cream would make her skin as soft as a baby’s, but she knew not to believe him. It was pie in the sky.

WHAT DOES PIE IN THE SKY MEAN?

ANSWER: Something that is unrealistic or that can’t be achieved.

Are you able to write one sentence with pie in the sky?

[AMERICAN ENGLISH IDIOMS] WHAT DOES FEEL THE PINCH MEAN?

I know that there is been a long time since I last published an entry here, but I have been pretty busy dealing with many things related to my professional life.

Now that I’m back, I would like to share with you some of the new (and not so new) expressions I’ve learned recently.

Have you guys ever heard of the American (it might not be American only) idiom FEEL THE PINCH*?

*(Third-person singular Simple Present feels the pinch, Present Participle feeling the pinch, Simple Past and Past Participle felt the pinch).

Let’s read it in context first:

The government raised taxes so much that even the rich began to feel the pinch.

When we had to pay for the university education of all three of our children at the same time, we really felt the pinch.

In case you still have no idea of what FEEL THE PINCH is, I will provide you with its definition.

DEFINITION:

When you feel the pinch, it means that you have less money than you used to have, and less than you feel is necessary.

I hope you have both learned and enjoyed this entry.

TO FEEL THE PINCH and STRAPPED FOR CASH are synonyms.

 See you around!
