The Classroom Experience: The Importance of Motivation
Numerous methods, approaches and techniques have been developed along the decades in order to improve the teaching process. Many teachers have conducted their classes by following what they consider to be the best way to help students gain understanding in the subject they are studying. But everything can be a waste of time, if students are not motived or paying any attention to the lessons.
Motivation seems to be the key for students’ understanding. Moreover, practice and research have proved it is crucial in language learning. Otherwise, the process fails if there is a lack of motivation on students. Research in language teaching has shown that when students are motivated they take risks in order to learn the subject studied. In addition, whatever kind of motivation learners have, it is clear that they do better than the ones without any motivation at all. Those ones who get interested in something see a useful reason to be engaged in lessons.
Although teachers play an important role in students’ motivation, they are not the only responsible for it. It is said that there are many different reasons for learners want to study other languages. Teachers must take into account that their students will only feel that something is important if they find it useful, that is, something that they can put in action. Learning how to behavior or perform in an interview can be an example of what had been said about practical usage of the subject.
Therefore, the importance of motivation has being discussed for a long time and its effectiveness is known. Students must be motivated all the time in order to feel confidence to practice and learn the language. Obviously, it is not easy to make students to get motived, but it can make students to be willing to take a better performance in learning.
