A BATTLE OF WILLS

LEAD SOMEONE UP THE GARDEN PATH




Meaning: if someone leads you up the garden path, they deceive you by making you believe something which is not true.


EXAMPLES:

Don't lead me up the garden path—tell me what is really going on here.

He led me up the garden path. He said the relationship with Penny was over but now he seems to be seeing her again.


According to by some websites, LEAD SOMEONE UP THE GARDEN PATH is mainly British. There is also the variety LEAD SOMEONE DOWN THE GARDEN PATH, which is mainly American English.

EXAMPLES:

Don't lead me down the garden path—tell me what is really going on here.

Now, be honest with me. Don't lead me down the garden path. That cheater really led her up the garden path.

He believes the average consumer is being led down the garden path by the promises in advertisements.

IN THE PIPELINE




You may have heard this one before. A pipeline is a large pipe that carries oil or gas over a long distance, often underground.

If something is in the pipeline, it is being planned or developed.

EXAMPLES:

o   The group has a new CD in the pipeline.
o   The theatre company has several new productions in the pipeline for next season.
o   Twenty-eight lawsuits were filed this week, and another 200 cases are in the pipeline.
o   The project has been in the pipeline since forever. I am not sure if it will ever get completed.
o   I am not working right now but have a few offers in the pipeline.
o   She keeps telling me that her new book is in the pipeline but is she even writing something right now?
o   My mother's operation has been scheduled. Finally, it has been in the pipeline for a very long time.
o   My boss asked for an update about every project that is in the pipeline right now. Is something going on that I don't know about?

[IDIOMS] IT COSTS AN ARM AND A LEG





One famous expression used in Brazil is that one about the cost of things, especially when we are talking about something very expensive. In English there are very similar idioms. When something costs a lot of money, we say that IT COSTS AN ARM AND A LEG. If I can remember well, in Brazil people say “Isso custa os olhos da cara” to refer to ‘It costs an arm and a leg’.

The idea here is pretty obvious: GIVING UP AN ARM AND A LEG TO BUY OR PAY FOR SOMETHING IS CLEARLY TOO COSTLY.

There are of course other ways of saying that in English – you can even use verbs such as PAY, CHARGE, and SPEND instead of COST.

EXAMPLES:


College tuitions cost an arm and leg nowadays.

I'm sick of paying rent in this town because it costs an arm and a leg!  

It cost us an arm and a leg to get here. But it has been worth every penny and more.

This suit cost me an arm and a leg.

I'd really like to have a new farm house, but it may cost me an arm and a leg.  

"How much would you pay for luxurious farmhouse by the beach? An arm and a leg?"

He really wants to go to that event. He's willing to pay an arm and a leg for it.

LOOK LIKE THE CAT THAT SWALLOWED THE CANARY




It’s been a long time since I last published something here, but I have been way too busy to find some time to share something on Portal da Língua Inglesa.

Now, I think it is time to try to start writing regularly again. I cannot promise that I will do it very often, but I will try to write at least an entry a week.

Have you guys ever heard of the expression look like the cat that swallowed the canary?

Examples:

01.When the teacher came into the classroom, the students sat there looking like cats that swallowed the canaries. The teacher knew the students must be planning something mischievous.
02. After her promotion, Janet spent the rest of the day looking like the cat that swallowed the canary.
03. When questioned on the use of campaign funds for his own personal pleasure, the senator looked like the cat that swallowed the canary.
04. After the meeting John looked like the cat that swallowed the canary. I knew he must have been a success.
05. Your presentation must have gone well. You look like the cat that swallowed the canary.

Meanings:

·            To have a knowing and self-satisfied smile on one’s face;
·     To be pleased with oneself, often because one has done something which one knows was wrong but which was very enjoyable;
·    To appear smug and/or overly pleased with oneself to others, especially over something one has done, received, or accomplished;
·         To have the appearance of guilt but attempt to hide behind an air of smugness or feigned nonchalance;
·         to appear as if one had just had a great success.

Entrevista com o professor Elias Bernardino




Poderia fazer um breve resumo de sua vida acadêmica/profissional?

Sou filho da escola pública. Entrei na faculdade de Letras e Artes pela UERN em 2005, aos 17 anos de idade. Formei-me em 2009. Antes disso, em 2008, tive minha primeira experiência formal com a docência, pois fui escolhido para trabalhar num projeto de extensão, com a parceria UERN-PETROBRAS, chamado “Programa de Criança Petrobras”. Na época, mudei-me para Mossoró, onde permaneci por nove meses nesse contrato.
Em 2009, retornei à minha cidade (Felipe Guerra) e fui professor substituto por quase dois anos, até finalmente, passar no meu primeiro concurso (2010) e ser convocado em 2011. Essa nova porta via prefeitura municipal me levou à cidade Governador Dix-Sept Rosado, onde trabalhei por cinco anos.
Em 2012, peguei meu segundo vínculo empregatício, mas dessa vez, na SEEC- RN (Secretaria de Estado da Educação e Cultura).
Em 2014, iniciei minha especialização em língua inglesa, também pela UERN. Esse curso foi concluído em 2016. Ano em que retornei mais uma vez a Felipe Guerra, onde permaneço até hoje, e também conquistei o segundo vínculo estadual na SEEC. O que me fez abandonar o vínculo municipal na cidade anterior, em respeito ao limite de carga horária do servidor.
Porque decidiu ser professor de Língua Inglesa? Já pensou, em algum momento, em mudar de profissão?
Acredito que ser filho de professor contribuiu para isso. Meu pai era geógrafo, porém, já ensinou inglês numa época em que professores graduados em língua estrangeira eram escassos. Eu tinha acesso àquele material dentro de minha casa e ficava encantado. Adicione a isso, o prazer por músicas internacionais e jogos de vídeo game (s saudosos da Nintendo me compreenderão).
Eu me sinto muito realizado por ser professor de inglês. É algo que me enche o peito de orgulho. No entanto, em momentos de crise, já pensei em mudar de profissão, largar a docência, mas nunca a língua inglesa. Pensei em secretariado-excecutivo, turismo e hotelaria, etc. Áreas que, ainda assim, demandam um idioma estrangeiro.


Como aprendeu inglês? Usou alguma técnica que você considera realmente efetiva? Falando em técnica, você tem alguma preferência por método ou abordagem?

Eu lembro que chegar a UERN e descobrir que iriam me ensinar a ser professor, e não a falar inglês foi um tanto impactante. Meu nível era muito baixo. Muitos de nós confundimos a licenciatura com curso de idiomas. Eu, porém, não perdi tempo. Eu usava o que me era disponível: dicionários, CDs, DVDs, músicas, filmes, etc. A internet ainda era artigo de luxo para alguns de nós. Lembro que após estudar sobre fonética, fiquei tão obsessivo que lia algumas páginas de dicionários para aprender a transcrição fonética dos termos e não mais precisar perguntar aos professores como se pronunciava tal palavra.
Durante as férias, revisava tudo o que havia estudado no período anterior para, ao retornar, o conteúdo ainda estar fresco em minha mente. Na falta de alguém para praticar, eu falava sozinho perante o espelho. Creio que do método audiolingual e passando pela abordagem comunicativa até aqui, pode haver variadas formas eficazes de aprender, mas todas vão requerer disciplina e compromisso. Não creio em mágicas na aprendizagem. Na minha prática docente, porém, gosto de unir as ideias do ensino significativo; o lúdico na aprendizagem por meio das TICs (entre outros) e a ‘task-based approach’.

Quais as dificuldades que um profissional de idiomas na região onde você atua?
Fazer o aluno entender que ele precisa de inglês aqui mesmo no Brasil é, desde já, nosso primeiro desafio. O idioma é presente em tudo que ele faz, mas parece não enxergar isso. Há também os problemas sistêmicos e estruturais: carga horária insuficiente, meios de avaliação ultrapassados, internet de baixa qualidade na escola (Eu não abro mão das tecnologias modernas!), etc.


Como você avalia a formação acadêmica na sua região?

Eu sou muito grato por tudo que me foi ofertado pela universidade pública. No entanto, creio ser preciso focar ainda mais na didática e fluência dos profissionais que saem de lá. Na minha opinião, é inadmissível que alguém saia formado para ensinar inglês sem saber falar o idioma. Também penso que a questão da inclusão social precisa de um reforço. Até hoje, não sei lidar muito bem com alunos que possuem alguns tipos de deficiência. Eu preciso aprender a alcançá-los. Finalmente, ainda sobre didática, é preciso aprender a avaliar o aluno. Tarefa nada simples como uma prova em finais de bimestre.

Quais são seus planos em relação a sua vida profissional?

Eu pretendo manter minha formação continuada. O mestrado não saiu de meus planos, mas tive que adiar por questões de saúde. Tenho o desejo de me tornar funcionário federal também, seja numa universidade ou instituto técnico. 

Todos os professores de língua inglesa sempre têm que responder à pergunta “você já morou fora?” Você já teve alguma experiência fora do país? Como foi essa experiência?

Em 2018, participei do programa PDPI pela CAPES e FULBRIGHT. Na oportunidade, estudei por seis semanas na San Francisco State University, CA, EUA. Era um curso de desenvolvimento de metodologias de ensino. Foi a experiência mais marcante na minha formação profissional. Eu agora podia responder à pergunta feita acima. Pude vivenciar a riqueza cultural naquela cidade, aprender mais do idioma, da história americana, costumes, etc. Não pude ser mais o mesmo.

Qual foi o grande momento da sua vida profissional até o momento?
Cada concurso no qual passei teve um significado diferente na minha vida profissional, e nenhum deles foi menos importante. Adiciono a esses episódios, a experiência vivida no exterior, relatada mais acima.

Já viveu alguma situação bastante inusitada em sala de aula? Poderia compartilhar conosco?

Foram muitas. Variam entre o cômico e o melancólico. Mas optarei por uma que deixará uma lição aos outros professores que nos leem aqui. Era 2011, eu acabara de chegar a Governador Dix Sept Rosado para o primeiro emprego efetivo. Numa aula num sexto ano D (de demônio mesmo!), onde o público era de alunos desnivelados (16 anos ou mais), eu estava lecionando sobre esportes. Mas, eu não havia tido o cuidado de averiguar cada termo do vocabulário principal no livro, me confiando que por se tratar de um sexto ano, eu teria total domínio. Acontece que das 25 modalidades esportivas em inglês, ali havia uma que eu não sabia o significado. Ao que eu deixei claro desconhecer o termo. Isso foi o bastante para um aluno gritar do meio da sala: “Ah! Pensei que você era mestre, mas é só um aprendiz!”, desdenhou ele. Constrangido, mas afiado como sempre, repliquei: “Você não poderia ter encontrado melhor termo para me definir. Sou aprendiz! Pois a partir do momento em que me sentir mestre, talvez eu desista de continuar aprendendo. Talvez eu me ache sábio o suficiente para não mais precisar buscar. E se ser aprendiz me possibilita continuar aprendendo, me chame de ‘eterno aprendiz’”. Dito isso, seguiu-se uma série de aplausos. Mas na outra semana, dei uma aula inteira sobre aquela modalidade esportiva que desconhecia na aula anterior. E nunca mais lecionei sem ler TODO o conteúdo antes.

Como é Elias Bernardino professor e como foi esse mesmo Elias Bernardino aluno? 

Eu me considero extrovertido e brincalhão no convívio com os alunos. Já tentei fazer a linha ‘professor-delegado’, achando que assim, eu causaria uma melhor impressão entre os meus pares. Mas percebi que aquilo era uma fraude. Não seria eu. Então, me aceitei à minha maneira. Sou muito preocupado com a minha didática. Sempre peço feedback dos alunos sobre nossos trabalhos. Eles são meus juízes. Lembro que quando voltei dos EUA, me acusaram de militarizar a escola porque vim cheio de técnicas de gestão de classe (risos). Estou sempre me reavaliando e buscando sempre me reinventar. Temo a inércia pedagógica que vejo ocorrer com outros profissionais. Inclusive, protestar contra o comodismo de alguns educadores já me rendeu muitos problemas.  Quando era aluno na educação básica, queria ser sempre o melhor da sala, ter as maiores notas, mas isso vinha de questões familiares, mais do que do espírito competitivo por si. Não era passivo. Era um calo no pé dos professores que não gostavam de ser contrariados. Acho que ainda carrego esse estigma: o garoto-problema.
