Dexter (TV series)

Dexter is an American television drama series that centers on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a bloodstain pattern analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who moonlights as a serial killer.

The show debuted on October 1, 2006, on Showtime and the fifth season ended on December 12, 2010. As of December 2, 2010, the show has been renewed for a sixth season. Set in Miami, the show's first season was largely based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, the first of his series of Dexter novels. Subsequent seasons have evolved independently of Lindsay's works. It was adapted for television by screenwriter James Manos, Jr., who wrote the pilot episode.

Dexter structures his killing around "the Code of Harry", a body of ethics and procedures devised by his adoptive father Harry Morgan (who was a Miami cop) to make sure Dexter never gets caught and to ensure that Dexter kills only other killers. Harry also trained Dexter in how to interact convincingly with other people despite his dissociative mental illness, which Harry believed to be sociopathy, arising from Dexter witnessing the brutal murder of his biological mother, Laura Moser. As an adult, Dexter has largely escaped suspicion (with some exceptions) by being genial and generous and maintaining generally superficial relationships. However, his attachment to his foster (and ultimately adoptive) sister, Debra, his girlfriend (later wife), Rita, his stepchildren, Astor and Cody, and later his biological son, Harrison, have all complicated his double life and made him question his need to kill. In fact, in the first season, newly-found memories of his mother's murder set in motion the slow but steady humanization of Dexter, progressing further with each season, as Dexter begins to experience a variety of emotions for the first time in years.

In February 2008, edited reruns began to air on CBS. The series has enjoyed wide critical acclaim and popularity. Season 4 aired its season finale on December 13, 2009 to a record-breaking audience of 2.6 million viewers, making it the most-watched original series episode ever on Showtime. Michael C. Hall has received several awards and nominations for his portrayal of Dexter, including a Golden Globe. The series was picked up by Showtime for a sixth season, which was billed as not being the final season, leaving possibilities open for a seventh.

Volutary manslaughter (homicídio privilegiado) – é aquele que envolve circunstâncias atenuadas.

Murder (homicídio qualificado) – é aquele que envolve circunstâncias agravantes.

Culpar – blame. To consider someone or something responsible for something bad.

[É uma serie boa para quem é estudante de enfermagem e/ou medicina e quer aprender ou melhorar o conhecimento linguístico em inglês, pois devido ao ambiente e o enredo, o vocabulário utilizado pelas personagens é sempre voltado para questões do dia-a-dia da área da saúde.] 

Grey's Anatomy é um drama médico norte-americano exibido no horário nobre da rede ABC. Seu episódio-piloto foi transmitido pela primeira vez em 27 de março de 2005 nos Estados Unidos. O folhetim é protagonizado por Ellen Pompeo, interpretando a Dra. Meredith Grey, residente do fictício hospital cirúrgico Seattle Grace, em Seattle, Washington, o mais rígido programa cirúrgico de Harvard. A série é focada nela e seus colegas, também internos: Cristina, Izzie, George e Alex, mostrando suas vidas amorosas e as dificuldades pelas quais passam no trabalho.

O título do seriado é uma brincadeira com Gray's Anatomy (Anatomia de Gray), o famoso livro de anatomia de Henry Gray. A série, exibida nos Estados Unidos após o hit Desperate Housewives, logo se tornou um sucesso.

Tal sucesso se repete no Brasil, onde a série é exibida pelo canal Sony Entertainment Television em horário nobre e também no SBT. Em Portugal, a série foi para o ar pelo canal Fox Life e pela RTP2.

[FALSE FRIENDS] O QUE SIGNIFICA “NOVEL” EM INGLÊS?

A palavra “novel” é um substantivo que significa “romance” quando traduzido do inglês para o português. Mas essa mesma palavra pode ser usada como um adjetivo. Nesse caso, ela tem o significado de “inovador”; “original”.

EXEMPLOS:

Poe is not into novels. He sometimes reads comic books.

Poe não é chegado em romances. Ele às vezes ler revistas em quadrinhos.

“Let TV audiences binge” Do you know what Binge-watching is?

You may probably not heard of BINGE-WATCHING before, but I am certainly that you have – at least once – binge-watched something.

In fact, I am doing it right now. I am watching Breaking Bad for the third time. No, no. it is not the third, but the fourth one. no… what I meant was “I’m watching the fourth season for the third time”. Well, is it? Sorry… it is probably because I have been watching this single television show for longer time spans than usual. I mean, I have watching Breaking Bad in one sitting – in a row. One, two, three… six, seven episodes and I don’t feel like stopping it soon!

So, that’s exactly what it is. BINGE-WATCHING means:

“to watch (multiple videos, episodes of a TV show, etc.) in one sitting or over a short period of time”

According to a survey conducted by Netflix in February 2014, 73% of people define binge-watching as "watching between 2-6 episodes of the same TV show in one sitting." (READ THE SURVEY HERE)

The website Wikipedia states that:

The idea of assembling several consecutive episodes of a television series in order and watching them in rapid succession originated with the marathon, in which the television stations themselves programmed several hours' worth of reruns of a single series. This practice began in the 1980s and is still popular among subscription television outlets in the 2010s.

The usage of the word "binge-watch" can be traced as far back as the late 1990s, when it was used by circles of television fandoms. It has consisted of watching several episodes of a particular show in a row via DVD sets.

Actor Kevin Spacey once said “Give people what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it in, at a reasonable price, and they’ll more likely pay for it rather than steal it. Well, some will still steal it, but I believe this new model can take a bite out of piracy,” (READ IT HERE)
