This cartoon by Paul Thomas from The Daily Express relates to a new study by the General Medical Council which found that more than one in six patients who are put on medication after seeing their GP (General Practitioner) are given a prescription containing an error.
The scene takes place in a pharmacy. The pharmacist tells a customer, "Here's your doctor's prescription—good luck!" Not surprisingly, the customer seems rather surprised.
VOCABULARY
A prescription is a piece of paper on which your doctor writes an order for medicine and which you give to a chemist or pharmacist to get the medicine.
The word prescription is also used to refer to the medicine the doctor gives you. If a medicine is available on presecription, you can only get it from a chemist or pharmacist if a doctor gives you aprescription for it (or prescribes it).
