INTEGRATE SPEAKING, WRITING, LISTENING, AND READING IN A PRACTICAL WAY IN YOUR EFL CLASSES.

I would like to share some ideas about how to integrate speaking, writing, listening, and reading in a practical way in your EFL classes.

This is one of the activities I used with my intermediate-level students. It’s a running dictation.

But first of all, we have to understand what a running dictation is, right?

A Running dictation, according to wiktionary.org, is a “classroom exercise in which students run to a text, and then pass the message verbally to a partner.” During this activity, we will have to put the students in pairs (or groups).

Remember that they will probably have to run in the classroom, so be make sure everything is okay in order to avoid accidents.

Each group will have to choose a writer and the runner(s). The writer will be responsible for writing down the sentences and the runner(s) for running (or walking if you like it) and dictate the sentences they will have to read (usually on the wall or on the board). The runner(s) will have to read silently and remember each sentence. (I particularly ask them to memorize only one sentence and run back to their writers).

The role of the writer is to write down the sentences in order to complete the whole text (or paragraph). They may also swap roles (the writers and the runners). As I believe students will only remember a few words (usually two or three) at a time, I would advise you to let them run back and forth until they finish the whole sentence.

In this very specific example, you could use one video and the speaker’s speech, so that students will have the chance to watch the video and listen to what the speaker is saying. I decided to use a video from Ted.com (video here).

I displayed two paragraphs (A and B below) on the wall and started the running dictation.  They will hear both paragraphs when they listen and watch the video.

A

Hello, everyone. Because this is my first time at TED, I've decided to bring along an old friend to help break the ice a bit. Yes. That's right. This is Barbie. She's 50 years old. And she's looking as young as ever.

B

My experience, however, in the Islamic world is very different. Where I work, in the Arab region, people are busy taking up Western innovations and changing them into things which are neither conventionally Western, nor are they traditionally Islamic.

The students had to choose between the groups (A or B) and do the activity.

When the first group finished I checked with them to see whether they had written the right sentences or not.

After that, I gave them the interactive transcript and played the talk three times giving them time to listen and complete the gaps.

The video:

Shereen El Feki: Pop culture in the Arab world

Hello, everyone. Because this is my first time at TED, I've decided to bring along an old friend to help break the ice a bit. Yes. That's right. This is Barbie. She's 50 years old. And she's looking as young as ever. (Laughter) But I'd also like to introduce you to what may be an unfamiliar face. This is Fulla. Fulla is the Arab world's answer to Barbie.

Now, according to proponents of the clash of (1) _________________, Barbie and Fulla occupy these completely separate spheres. They have different interests. They have (2) _______________ values. And should they ever come in contact ... well, I've got to tell you, it's just not going to be pretty.

My experience, however, in the Islamic world is very different. Where I work, in the Arab region, people are busy taking up Western innovations and changing them into things which are neither conventionally Western, nor are they traditionally Islamic. I want to show you two examples. The first is 4Shbab. It means "for youth" and it's a new Arab TV channel.

(Video): Video clips from across the globe. The USA.

♫ I am not afraid to stand alone ♫

♫ I am not afraid to stand alone, if Allah is by my side ♫

♫ I am not afraid to stand alone ♫

♫ Everything will be all right ♫

♫ I am not afraid to stand alone ♫

The Arab world.

(Music)

♫ She was preserved by modesty of the religion ♫ ♫ She was adorned by the light of the Quran ♫

Shereen El Feki: 4Shbab has been dubbed Islamic MTV. Its (3) ________________, who is an Egyptian TV producer called Ahmed Abu Haïba, wants young people to be inspired by Islam to lead better lives. He reckons the best way to get that (4) ___________________ across is to use the enormously popular medium of music videos. 4Shbab was set up as an alternative to existing Arab music channels. And they look something like this. (Music)

That, by the way is Haifa Wehbe. She's a Lebanese pop star and pan-Arab pin-up girl. In the world of 4Shbab, it's not about bump and grind. But it's not about fire and brimstone either. Its videos are intended to show a kinder, gentler face of Islam, for young people to deal with life's challenges.

Now, my (5)_________________ example is for a slightly younger crowd. And it's called "The 99." Now, these are the world's first Islamic superheroes. They were created by a Kuwaiti psychologist called Naif Al Mutawa. And his desire is to rescue Islam from images of intolerance, all in a child-friendly format. "The 99." The characters are meant to embody the 99 attributes of Allah: justice, wisdom, mercy, among others. So, for example, there is the character of Noora. She is meant to have the power to look inside people and see the good and bad in everyone. Another character called Jami has the ability to create fantastic inventions.

Now, "The 99" is not just a (6)__________________. It's now a theme park. There is an animated series in the works. And by this time next year, the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman will have joined forces with "The 99" to beat injustice wherever they find it.

"The 99" and 4Shbab are just two of many examples of this sort of Islamic cross-cultural hybridization. We're not talking here about a clash of civilizations. Nor is it some sort of indistinguishable mash. I like to think of it as a mesh of civilizations, in which the strands of different cultures are intertwined.

Now, while 4Shbab and "The 99" may look new and shiny, there is actually a very long tradition of this. Throughout its history, Islam has borrowed and adapted from other civilizations both ancient and modern. After all, it's the Quran which encourages us to do this: "We made you into nations and tribes so that you could learn from one another." And to my mind, those are pretty wise words, no matter what your creed. Thank you. (Applause)

I do hope you have enjoyed this activity! See you next time!

You may also ask the students to write what they thought of the video on the ‘discuss session’ on the video on the site (here).

Mantenha o perfil no LinkedIn sempre atualizado!

5 Ways to Make Feedback on Writing a Positive Experience

Online teaching is not always done in real time. Some of my private instruction is now given through written assignments. Students submit drafts and I provide feedback. We don’t schedule live lessons, so that mainly leaves us with written communication: email, comments, and track changes on documents. You may wonder how effective this instruction can be and if either the student or I feel restricted by the experience.

An academic session at TESOL 2015 got me thinking about recording oral feedback. (Click to read some of Nathan Hall’s suggestions.) Another presentation at TESOL 2016 reinforced my belief that such feedback has multiple benefits. (Click to read aboutEffectiveness of Audio Feedback for EFL Students in Online Courses.) I decided to make screencasts for my writing students as another way of giving corrections and modeling the writing process. I also realize I’m giving additional listening practice and strengthening the student-teacher connection.

Like so many other skills, from lesson planning to test design, the more you do it, the better you get. I’ve compiled a list of good practices when recording oral feedback, be it video or audio. It’s partly to keep myself in check because I need to use my recording time more effectively and deliver a set of comments that’s concise and well-balanced.

1. Guide the learner through multiple revisions. I know I shouldn’t give too much correction in a single draft. Doing so can overwhelm a student. I often have to remind myself to focus on different aspects in each revision. First, I address format and overall structure. Then I might call attention to use of transitions within a paragraph as well as vocabulary and grammar. A later revision can tackle wordiness and the need to reduce repetition.

2. Balance teacher correction and self-correction. Even after all these years, there’s a temptation to go about editing a text from beginning to end. But if there’s a mistake repeated multiple times, the student will likely retain the correction if he does it himself. Also, having too many corrections on a page doesn’t create a positive impression, so I sometimes I correct a type of grammar mistake, like articles in generic references, once or twice and then highlight other instances. Then it’s up to the student to fix the remaining mistakes.

3. Sprinkle in some praise at the right times. Too much cheering from the sidelines won’t seem genuine, but feedback can’t be all about fixing mistakes and addressing weaknesses. I love to see a student apply feedback from a previous assignment to the current one. That’s certainly worth complimenting.

4. Take advantage of teachable moments. The focus may be on writing skills, but there are times when pausing or digressing is worth it. Instead of suggesting a replacement for a poor word choice, I might list the original choice along with a new one, giving both definitions. Then the student must consider the difference and choose. I’ve also searched for online explanations and writing models to supplement my own. When I find a particularly good resource, I note the link for the student. I want students to be aware of resources they can use long after our lessons run their course.

5. Keep all forms of feedback at your disposal. Even in my screencasts I use track changes and insert text comments. I probably do this to a lesser degree when I’m giving oral feedback, but I like combining the two forms. For example, I may make a track change but talk aloud as I’m considering how best to structure a sentence. Then the student can see how I experiment and arrive at the newly worded idea. I also still provide only written feedback on some drafts.

It can be challenging to make an online learning experience meaningful. Based on my experience, video – live or recorded – can help.

THREE ICEBREAKERS TO BE USED IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING

One of the things I’m sure of is that icebreakers are really important when it comes to teaching an additional (foreign or second) language.

Icebreakers, among other definitions, may be seen as “fantastic ways to start the day running and great methods of learning about your students and getting them to interact with each other.” Some teachers start their classes with icebreakers in order to get students in the mood for the lesson. Sometimes – but not always – icebreakers are connected to the topic to be studied in the lesson.

In this very short entry, I would like to share with you some ideas I’ve been using in my classes lately – three icebreakers that can also be used as warmers.

The first one is ‘Fact or fiction?’

Fact or fiction?

What to do and how to do it?

Ask everyone to write on a piece of paper THREE things about themselves which may not be known to the others in the group. Two are true and one is not. Taking turns they read out the three ‘facts’ about themselves and the rest of the group votes which are true and false. There are always surprises. This simple activity is always fun, and helps the group and leaders get to know more about each other.

The second one is ‘interview’

Interview

What to do and how to do it?

Divide the young people into pairs. Ask them to take three minutes to interview each other. Each interviewer has to find 3 interesting facts about their partner. Bring everyone back to together and ask everyone to present the 3 facts about their partner to the rest of the group. Watch the time on this one, keep it moving along.

The third one is ‘my name is?’

My name is?

What to do and how to do it?

Go around the group and ask each young person to state his/her name and attach an adjective that not only describes a dominant characteristic, but also starts with the same letter of his name e.g. generous Grahame, dynamic Dave. Write them down and refer to them by this for the rest of the evening.

I do hope you guys enjoy this one!

See you around!

Enquanto houver a visão de que o inglês da escola é do tipo “the book is on the table”, nada mudará.

Eu me lembro também de situações engraçadas como uma vez que perguntei a um aluno: What do you do in order to improve your phisical appearance? e de a resposta ter sido: I shave my “bird”.

People who post their fitness routine to Facebook have psychological problems, study claims

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Be honest with me here: You have one or even multiple friends, who always post their gym activity to Facebook. Or maybe that person is you.

"Ran 15 miles before work! Yeah 💪" can be motivating to read in the morning, or incredibly annoying, depending on how much you hate that painfully overused flexed-bizeps-emoji.
Researchers from the Brunel University in London have conducted a study as to why so many people share every workout on social media. The results are unflattering, to say the least.
Addicted to attention and esteem
People who are always keen on documenting their gym activities (or every time you simply go for a good, old-fashioned run) tend to be narcissists. According to the researchers, the primary goal is to boast about how much time you invest in your looks. Apparently, these status updates also earn more Facebook likes than other kinds of posts.

"Narcissists more frequently updated about their achievements, which was motivated by their need for attention and validation from the Facebook community", the study concludes. The high number of likes doesn't necessarily mean everyone loves seeing those bragging posts, though. Dr Tara Marshal goes on saying, that "although our results suggest that narcissists' bragging pays off because they receive more likes and comments to their status updates, it could be that their Facebook friends politely offer support while secretly disliking such egotistical displays."

So, unless you get creative in your workout, maybe hold back on those daily Facebook updates on your progress in the gym. Your friends will thank you for it.
