This is going to be a very short post. Do you know
what ‘hit the books’ means?
No?
Read the examples:
“I gotta go home and hit the books. I have finals next
week.”
“I can't go out tonight. I've got to hit the books.”
To ‘hit the books’ means ‘to begin to study hard’

e “ilegal”.
Qual
tradução vocês dariam para a seguinte frase?
He’s a real
scrumbag!
Eu
traduziria assim:
Ele é um cuzão
(pessoal horrível).
Existem
Asshole (US) ou arsehole (UK)
Dick
Prick
Runt
Schlep/schmuck (US)
Shyster
Sleazebag
Tosser (UK)
Wanker (US)
Dirtbag

O substantivo intelligence não significa apenas “inteligência”.
Tal palavra inglesa é usada no contexto militar com significado de “informações”;
“serviço de informações” ou “serviço secreto”. Para ajudar a guardar esse
significado lembre-se da sigla “CIA” –
Central Intelligence Agency, a agencia central de inteligência, ou seja, o serviço
secreto americano.
“We acted on the intelligence we
had at the time and decided to storm the embassy and rescue the hostages”, an
Army spokesman told the press.
“Nós
agimos de acordo com as informações que tínhamos no momento e decidimos invadir
a embaixada e resgatar os reféns”, um porta-voz do exército disse à imprensa.
“Based on the intelligence we
have at the moment, the best course of action is to immediately send troops to
the region”, said Colonel Carter.
“De
acordo com as informações que temos no momento, o melhor a fazer é enviar
soldados imediatamente à região”, disse o coronel Carter.
Sim, ‘intelligence’ pode sim significar ‘inteligência’
também!

I am not going to take much
of your time today. I know how busy you guys must have been recently. In fact, I
know that this is the time of the year when people take a break from their,
say, academic obligations. Yes, we are all on vacation! Great!
I am going straight to the point,
then.
PLEASE, READ THIS SENTENCE:
I
think I will get an early night.
What does ‘an early night’
mean?
Well, in case you haven’t figure
it out, I will provide you with some more examples:
Hey
John, I think you need an early night.
I’ve
had a hell of a day, and all I want is an early night.
Meaning: if you have an early night, you go to bed earlier than usual.
Are you able to write more
sentences using ‘an early night’?
Now that you know the
meaning of ‘an early night’, I would like to remind you that the opposite of
this expression is ‘a late night’ as in I think I’ll have
a late night.
See you guys around!

É
bem comum, ao assistirmos desenhos animados, percebermos um dos personagens apaixonado;
diz, “bem me quer, mal me quer...”.
She loves me,
she loves not... (Se for do sexo masculino).
He loves me,
he loves not... (Se for do sexo feminino).

Você
saberia dizer o significado de TO BE RUSTY em português?
VAMOS
LER ALGUNS EXEMPLOS:
I haven't spoken French for several years so I feel a
little rusty.
My Spanish is sort of rusty as I haven’t practiced it in a long time.
I haven't played chess for a long time so I feel a little rusty.
TO BE RUSTY= When you haven’t done something
in such a long time that you're not as good as you were before.
tempo; enferrujado.

Você sabe o significado de GO DOWN IN HISTORY?
Vejamos alguns exemplos:
The Beatles
will certainly go down in history as a great
rock band.
Martin Luther
King went down in history as a great spiritual
leader and peace-maker.

In Spanish they El Camino de Santiago. Hopefully you
will understand what I am talking about here.
I love travelling and
visiting places. I usually don’t plan a lot. I just go for it instead. There’s
nothing like meeting people you have never imagined you would meet before you
do it. Although I have never traveled that route, I would say that I think I’d
enjoy it.
Anyway… I’m too tired to
write a great post here tonight. I’ll try to go straight to the point,
otherwise, I would take a big risk of writing something completely nonsense.
Do you know how to say El Camino de Santiago in English? If you
don’t know how to say that, let me educate you.
In English, we say Way of St. James. James? But where does
this James come from? Well, in English, Tiago is actually James. Therefore, that
is why we use Way of St. James
instead of Way of Santiago or
something like that. You guys are very intelligent, so I suppose you must have
realized that ‘St’ stands for ‘Saint’, right?
According to Wikipedia:
The Way of St. James, St. James's Way, St. James's Path, or St. James's
Trail (commonly known by its name in Spanish: El Camino de Santiago) is the
name of any of the pilgrimage routes (most commonly the Camino Francés or
French route) to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral
of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has
it that the remains of the saint are buried. Many take up this route as a form
of spiritual path or retreat, for their spiritual growth. Brazilian author
Paulo Coelho wrote the book "The Diary of a Magus (Magician)" or
"The Pilgrimage" based on his own experience along this way.
Pilgrims from all over the
world have been following the Way of Saint James for a thousand years. The
pilgrimage remains as alive today as ever, and many people come to enjoy the
hospitality offered at every stage of the way and discover much more than a
journey.
No pain, no glory!
Would you like to discover
Spain through the route of the Way of Saint James?

Okay, here we are again.
My next blog posts will probably be very short. That is, I will either post
lesser then the previous week or there will be no posts at all.
TOO MANY PEOPLE AND ICE
BUCKETS. No, that’s not a new short story or a name for a novel! It’s rather
about the huge number of videos people have been publishing recently. Let me
see if we are on the same page – If you have logged onto Facebook this week,
chances are your newsfeed has been flooded with videos of people drenching
themselves in ice water. Have you seen them? Were you wondering what the heck that
was?
Seriously? Well, it’s
all about The Ice Bucket Challenge. It
is “an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on one's head, which
was started as a campaign to promote awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
(ALS)”. It gained widespread popularity in 2014.
P.s.: I also had a hard time trying to figure
this ALS out. Luckily, I have finally found it on Wikipedia- Esclerose lateral amiotrófica.
I have showed my
students some videos about the challenge, but I especially liked the ones with Mark
Zuckerberg – the one that he nominates Bill Gate –, and Bill Gates’s answer. (You
may want to watch both of them):
Mark
Zuckerberg Ice Bucket Challenge
Nominates Bill Gate! Official
video:
Mark
Zuckerberg:
“Yesterday, Governor Chris Christie challenged me to
do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
I accepted his challenge, and now I'm challenging Bill
Gates, Sheryl Sandberg and Reed Hastings next.
You guys have 24 hours to complete the challenge or
you have to donate to the ALS foundation -- or both.
Finding ways to treat and cure ALS is an important
cause. Find out more here: http://www.alsa.org”
Bill Gates
ALS Ice Bucket Challenge:
Bill
Gates:
“Mark Zuckerberg challenged me to dump a bucket of ice
water on my head to raise awareness for ALS.
I’m always up for a challenge.
Now I’m passing it on to On Air with Ryan Seacrest,
Chris Anderson from TED, and Elon Musk. You have 24 hours…”
The rulesare “within 24 hours of receiving a challenge, participants
are to video record themselves in continuous footage. First, they are to
announce their acceptance of the challenge followed by pouring ice into a
bucket of water. The bucket is then to be lifted overhead and poured over the
participant's head. After completion, the participant has the option of extend
the challenge and to donate $10 to the ALS charity of their choice.
Alternatively, they can decline the challenge, in which case they are
encouraged to donate $100.”
Well, taking into account
that students like challenges, I will challenge
them. You don’t believe it, do you? Well, wait for my next video on the
subject.
